Yellowstone Animals

Images from six days in Yellowstone National Park in May 2025. Late spring in Yellowstone is a mixed bag because the weather is very changeable. We had rain, snow, and sunshine, sometimes all in the same day, but the benefit was that the crowds were much smaller than in the summer -- a huge plus. Most -- but not all -- roads and trails were open. The wildlife was very active throughout the day thanks to the cool temperatures, although early morning and early evening are still the prime times to observe and capture images. Best of all are the newborns, including red dogs (bison calves) and bear cubs. Some of the "babies" are included in this portfolio. For first time photography visitors, I recommend that you hire a photographer/guide early in your visit in order to become familiar with this massive park. Although the apex predators like grizzlies and wolves are thrilling to see, there is so much more to photograph (or simply observe) if you go slowly, take hikes or even short walks, and let the park "come to you".
